I found the chapter about the Atlantic Revolutions interesting. It never occurred to me that the French Revolution was an offshoot of the American Revolution. Though there were different root causes, the results were similar. The French soldiers' experiences in assisting the North American colonists during the American Revolutionary War certainly awakened a desire for self-government and reforms. However, where as the
North American colonists had already developed a set of protocols for self-government due to the benign neglect of the British crown, the French still lived within a very feudal society. It was also interesting to see what other benefits of the Atlantic
Revolutions developed, especially the abolition of slavery and early development of
Feminism. I'll have to say, though, that I was truly stunned when I learned that the
Women in France did not have the right to vote until 1945!
